The Berlitz Language Levels and the European Framework

At the beginning of each language training program, we assess your current language skills. We discuss your goals and the language level you wish to achieve. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) established by the Council of Europe defines different proficiency levels. These levels make the assessment of language skills more transparent and comparable. The CEFR levels range from A1 for beginners to C2, which corresponds to native-level proficiency.

The ten Berlitz levels can be easily aligned with the CEFR levels. The following overview helps you determine your language proficiency. Not sure which level you are at? Take our free placement test.

Berlitz Level 1 | CEF A1

You can communicate with elementary questions and answers in simple situations, e.g., when it comes to personal information.

You correctly work through other typical situations using your foreign language knowledge, such as introducing yourself, dealing with facts and figures, ordering a meal, or asking questions. In a conversation, you can participate in a simple way if your conversational partner speaks slowly and helps with repetitions.
